Work Experience:
Washington Tax Advisors, Inc. - Marketing and Business Development; Feb 1997- 1999.
- Washington Tax Advisors, Inc was one of the first "tax settlement" focused companies in the US. It was founded in 1989, right around the time the IRS began standardizing its (previously informal) Offer in Compromise program. Washington Tax successfully utilized direct mail campaigns to promote tax settlement services. As a low-cost alternative to tax representation, WTA, Inc provided simple form preparation assistance and advising. If direct contact with the IRS was needed, the clients would generally handle it themselves.
- Washington Tax Advisors was revolutionary for a tax company in the way we processed client cases from all 50 states from our central Seattle office. All client communication (pre-internet) was handled over the phone and through mail and faxes. This opened up a much larger geographic area for us to work in and also gave many people access to our services, who otherwise may not have been able to find them locally.
- I assisted the owner and founder in running the mailing campaigns, developing proprietary client management software, upgrading the internal accounting systems and general management of the company.
JWBLE, LLC - (dba: Washington Tax Services & National Tax Relief) Managing Partner; 1999-2011
- Dec 1999 - Washington Tax Advisors, Inc was dissolved and reorganized, becoming JWBLE, LLC and operating under the (dba) names Washington Tax Services and National Tax Relief.
- JWBLE was a high volume tax resolution firm. In the early 2000s we grew rapidly and were bringing in approximately 2-3000 new clients per year. We grew to around 25 employees, including tax attorneys, CPAs, enrolled agents and numerous sales and support staff.
- Building off of the Washington Tax Advisors model, we added IRS and state representation, as well as tax preparation and tax compliance research to our list of services. The Wall Street Journal, in an article about one of our competitors, listed us as one of the three best known tax resolution firms in the country.
- March 2005 - I passed the IRS Enrolled Agent Exam and was admitted to practice.
- ~2008-2011 - JWBLE/Washington Tax Services went through some financial ups and downs as the economy softened, IRS budgets were slashed and more competitors entered the market. We shrank down to around 12 employees to handle our reduced client-load. Around this time, I took over as the primary tax professional on all of our client accounts.
#1 Discount Tax Return Services, LLC - Owner, sole proprietor; 2007-2012.
- This was a side project I took on with a software developer to create a tax preparation program for filing taxes online.
- Our program was live for 4 tax seasons and we were an active member of the IRS Free File Alliance. More info here -> About the Free File Alliance.
- This was fun and I learned a lot, but ultimately it was not profitable enough to continue.
Watax, LLC - (dba Washington Tax Services) Managing Partner; April 2011 - July 2018.
- In 2011, I reorganized Washington Tax again, this time as a 50/50 partnership with a key employee, Jay Freeborne. As co-owners, we both "wore many hats", but in general, Jay was responsible for the front end sales and marketing and I was responsible for the back end management. Jay brought in the clients and I made sure the work got done.
- I was the principle tax professional on all of our representation cases and also handled audit representation and some of our tax preparation work.
- July 2018 - I sold my half of the business to Jay. Watax is still in operations.
Corvid Tax, LLC - owner, sole proprietor; 2018-present
- At the time of this writing, Corvid Tax is a new venture for me. I want to build off of my 20-years+ of tax experience and provide high quality, individualized tax representation and preparation services.
